The Torres de Gaia proposal redefines urban density in Vila Nova de Gaia by integrating residential, hospitality, and coworking programs into a singular, landmark destination. The project is centered on the creation of a "place"—a site that balances high-rise innovation with a poetic consistency that aims to reshape the city’s collective imagination.
While the towers rise with rhythmic precision, the ground plane is defined by a radical, fluid openness. A central pedestrian artery is carved through the site, following the natural topography to dissolve the boundaries between private development and public life. This "urban lung" pulls the city’s energy through the core of the lot, connecting commercial storefronts with lush landscapes. The plinth of the hospitality tower extends this experience, offering expansive outdoor esplanades and intimate wooden decks protected by arboreal barriers.
The project’s identity is found in the contrast between its permeable base and its articulated, "romantic" skin. Both towers are designed around a strict modular metric, where each living unit is extended by a small, juxtaposed balcony. This creates a delicate lacework across the facade, inspired by vernacular silhouettes but executed with contemporary rigor.
This textured envelope is as functional as it is aesthetic. The wrap-around balconies act as a passive thermal shield, protecting the interiors from direct solar heat and significantly enhancing energy efficiency. Additionally, the void spaces between the balcony modules allow for the hidden installation of HVAC units, ensuring a clean and iconic silhouette.
The development carefully balances its diverse uses across two distinct volumes; the Residential Tower, comprising 186 units (T0 to T4), features "refuge areas" at height for yoga, sports, and community lounges, crowned by a rooftop pool and multi-use terrace. The Hospitality & Cowork Tower, housing 260 keys (a mix of hotel and serviced apartments), shares premium amenities—including a 160-seat restaurant and a fitness center—complemented by dedicated coworking floors.
